Testimonials
“In Manifesto for Young Asian Women, Shiuan Butler speaks out courageously about the hidden lives of girls in this country, whatever their background, I wish I’d had such a book when I was fifteen. I believe her experience and advice will be helpful for girls and young women for generations to come.”
— Gloria Steinem, writer and feminist activist.
“This is the ideal book for any girl who has ever felt alone — it will offer her comfort and advice and confidence. Shiuan Butler writes honestly and candidly about the ups and the down of growing up female.”
— Amy Richards, co-founder of the Third Wave Foundation, Soapbox, Inc. and the voice behind “Ask Amy”
“Shiuan Butler has penned what’s on the surface a brave, very personal account of her experiences as a young, female, Asian, immigrant, survivor of assault and domestic violence. Breaking the silence with this story is, in itself, a revolutionary act. Yet, the true power of this book is that it will resonate with anyone who’s ever been marginalized for being who they are, anyone who’s ever had to find the courage to rebuild their life, anyone who’s ever wondered if they were alone in the world. By being brave enough to bare herself and share what she’s learned along the way, Butler has given us a road map to understanding and navigating the complex realities of young womanhood in America today.”
— Shelby Knox, itinerant feminist organizer
“Her ‘big sister bible’ will truly, truly, truly be a talisman for the intended audience of Asian sisters, but will definitely inspire anyone who happens to pick it up–regardless of ethnicity or origin—-I wish someone had handed me a like-minded, loving, blunt and no-holds-barred life reference guide when I was 14!”
— Vinnie Angel, creator of Vinnie’s Tampon Case

“I re-read it and actually I couldn’t stop until I had read the whole thing. I’m thinkin of forwarding it to my daughter-in-law for my two teenaged grand-daughters.”

I read Manifesto in one sitting – though I am not Asian I find it rings true especially in my memories of my teenage years. You have gone through quite a lot in your life and I am happy for all your success. My favorite sections are about capitalism and social pressures. I will take advantage of the excellent resources you provided at the end of your book as well!
Hi Claire,
Awesome– thanks for your comment! Great to hear your shared enthusiasm on young women’s experiences and struggles. Sexism is sexism is sexism.
Best,
Shiuan
