It's been a pretty intense couple weeks 'vacation in Hawai'i.' To be honest, it must be one of THE MOST stressful vacations I've ever had. All I can do is laugh at it now.... because hey, that's all we can ultimately do, right? But trust me, I was definitely crying/having a panic attack at first.
But to back up a little -- I had to leave the place I was staying at due to bad flea situation. I packed up and moved and was panicking trying to find a new place within a couple of hours for that night. (Fleas are just horrendous if you don't control it.) Thus the Home poem.
Then just as I was wrapping up that claim with Airbnb, I lost my purse one evening while I was riding a bike -- it fell off, and when I ran back (it was a 5 min bike ride) it was gone. Not sure if you've ever lost your bag or wallet, but it's a lot more traumatizing than it sounds. More like a personal violation, not of your body but your private things. And all your important documents. Also since I was traveling as well, it was especially disorienting and upsetting.
It's been almost 72 hours and I'm a bit better for wear. I've recovered from the initial shock and devastation. The Honolulu police thankfully was real nice and friendly. I was amazed I was able to pull myself together to fill out the police report. The female officer was kind enough to walk me through it.
Turns out life is pretty difficult with no ID, no credit card and no phone. But I made it through. I'm almost-- used to being without a phone. Not quite, but almost.
Funny, I know others who have had a crazy January. Maybe you didn't run into a deer or have your purse stolen and wandering around with no ID on vacation, but maybe you too have felt overwhelmed, a bit befuddled, confused, not sure where to go, do to get to where you want to go.
That's why I titled this post: Five Steps to an Awesome February.
I love thinking about new beginnings. They feel fresh and exciting and full of possibility. Most people tend to focus on the new year for all of their hopefulness. But I love thinking of new beginnings at the start of every month. Why not?
Here are my 5 steps to prepare for an amazing February month. Take the time when you have an hour or so to yourself to think through these steps.
Five Steps to an Awesome February:
1. A ________ February.
What was your word of the year that you chose for yourself for 2018? Mine is: Magical. A Magical February. Put your word in the blank. What does that mean to you? What might that look like?
2. What is your 2018 vision or goal?
Are you clear on what your main goal or important vision for this year looks like? Journal on it for 10 minutes. While you can have many dreams and plans, I would ask you to ultimately choose 1 main goal. If you had to pick one that you could realize this year what would it be?
3. What is your February sub-goal?
Now that you have your 2018 vision, what would be a sub-step for the month of February? Basically, what is your next step towards that larger 2018 goal?
4. Break it down into 3 steps.
Now, let's take that February goal and break it down into 3 action steps. What next 3 steps would you need to get to that month's goal?
5. Assign dates.
If you're anything like me, things don't get done unless it's posted on your calendar and not just on a generic to do list. Assign dates to each of those 3 steps. It's OK if you fall behind. Hey, life happens. You can't be too hard on yourself. But at least these dates will be guidelines for you, and help keep you looking and moving forward and have a forward vision to keep pulling you along and strive towards.
And that's it. Totally doable right?
Find a nice quiet cafe spot and your favorite drink and go through these steps. I always have my colored pens and notebooks and calendar and journals. Get whatever tools you need.
Planning is 90% of doing. Without a plan, you're just flying by the seat of your pants. And a small likelihood you'll get to where you want. Especially since you may not even be sure what that is without planning and thinking ahead.
