This Sunday I found myself deep in a funk that I couldn't seem to climb out of. I kept trying to get myself out of my apartment. I could drive to the ocean. I could go to a coffee shop outside of the city. I could go to a pretty park. Nothing. I couldn't get myself even out the door.
Maybe you've experienced this before. Is it lack of motivation? Worrying or moping about something underneath the surface? It almost doesn't matter, because nothing productive is happening at that point. So, how do we snap ourselves out of a deep funk?
You will definitely want to check out this week's journaling prompts where we will work on coming up with a list of things that will be your go-to when you get into a funk. Meanwhile we can do a bit of brainstorming now of what can help.
Tips To Drive That Funk Away:
- You'll want something that can bring you immediately into the present. Meditation might be a little too loose of an activity to do at this time. You might want something a bit more intense --- whether it's cardio exercise or listen to a motivational podcast. Something to engage all of your mind/body.
- Just do it. When you're deep in the funk, you will not feel like DOING ANYTHING. Trust me. I know you know what I mean. So unfortunately you're just going to have to make yourself, when you still don't quite feel like it. It'll get better though, I promise!
3. Be really gentle with yourself. Your self critical voices will likely be really up at this time. Maybe you can hear them or not. But I really recommend to go easy on yourself at this time. Maybe this is not the best time to get 20 things checked off your list. And that's OK.
4. Finally, find some laughter. Whether it's memes (I'm into vegan memes right now but that's just me) or your favorite comedian or comic strip, getting some laughs always helps loosen things up and can shake those funk clouds off temporarily so you can think what you'd like to do next.
