Daily Dabbles is finally here!
At age 12 we moved halfway across the world, from Columbus, Ohio back to Taiwan and boy was I terrified. I couldn't barely speak the language (Mandarin) anymore, all the public schools had uniforms and strict hair, shoes, socks, everything policies.
I went to two different schools in two years in middle school in Taipei. FUN! It was a very interesting experience, where I finally improved my Chinese, and realized that there was A WHOLE SLEW of people who spoke this language, and it wasn't just an annoying chore I had to do on Sundays at Chinese school!
By the time I returned to the States for high school, I was pretty ingrained in conservative Chinese culture. That is to say, I had never been to a school dance or on a 'date.' Yes, I finally got attention from boys that I never did in the States, which promptly disappeared again when I returned to the U.S.
I continued to feel shy in high school, and started pushing myself to speak up in college where I studied Asian American Studies and started growing my feminist spirit (where were all the AA women's voices??).
Sometimes I think it's harder to be shy than to be outgoing. Because when you observe extroverts it looks like whatever is going through their head comes straight out of their mouths. An easy flow. But when you're shy, tons of things swirl around your head, and only a very small percentage comes out of your mouth --- if anything at all. And all that pressure starts building up in your head of all those thoughts. That's where journaling comes in.
If you journal consistently, and almost daily, then you'll have a healthy outlet for those thoughts. Not only that, you'll even discover new thoughts that you didn't realize you had! Cool right?? I know firsthand sticking to a regular practice is not easy. And that's why I created DAILY DABBLES:
